How to Throw a Great Halloween Party

Spooky season is upon us! Halloween is the perfect time to gather your friends for a night of fun, frights and festivities. There aren't many occasions in the year to dress up and decorate, so you'll want to make sure that your Halloween party is a night to remember. Follow these steps to make sure that your All Hallows Eve is hauntingly good! From creepy decor to thrilling party games, these steps will ensure that your party is the talk of the town.

  1. Decorate to your heart’s content

It’s all about the atmosphere. Transform your party space into a spooky setting that will immerse your guests. Step one is the lighting; whether you’re partying in an abandoned, haunted building or gathering a few friends at home, you should aim for dim, low lighting, using candles (either real or LED) or fairy lights to illuminate the place. Bonus points for orange, red, purple or green coloured lights to create an eerie glow. You could also add flickering lanterns to give the space a haunted feel. Of course, the finishing touch to any Halloween party is a pumpkin/Jack-o’-lantern with a tea light inside.

For a huge Halloween bash, you could consider getting a fog machine to really amp up that spook factor. Other decorations could include fake cobwebs, ghostly hanging figures, crime scene tape, plastic sheeting or window decals to give your party space the feel of a haunted house.

Depending on your theme (more on that below), you can tailor your decor accordingly. Going for a gothic literature theme? Add old, dusty books, quill pens and candelabras so that your party would impress the likes of Edgar Allan Poe.

You don’t need to spend a ton of money to host a great Halloween party, and many decorations can be handmade for a low cost. Consider creating paper bats, putting carved pumpkins at the entrance and making potion bottles out of empty jars for an extra flair of creativity.

Whatever you decide, your decor will set the scene for an unforgettable night.

  1. Serve delicious Halloween treats

What’s a party without great food? For a Halloween celebration, aim for spooky, themed treats that are as fun to look at as they are delicious. Don’t worry if you’re not a natural cook or baker, you don’t need to be a master chef to create some spooky treats. Here are a few simple, yet effective, ideas:

  • Mini “mummy” hot dogs - regular hot dogs wrapped in strips of puff pastry to look like mummies.

  • Witch’s finger biscuits - regular biscuits/cookies rolled and baked into a finger-like shape, with indentations for the knuckles, and an almond at the end to look like a witch’s fingernail. As an extra step, you could add green food colouring to make the finger look even more witchy.

  • Dirt pudding - chocolate cake or muffins with gummy worms scattered on top.

  • Creepy cocktails - offer a punch bowl or individual cocktails with “bloody” red drinks. You could also do non-alcoholic drinks for children or non-drinkers, such as green punch labelled as “witch’s brew”. You could even make a “floating hand” ice cube, where you fill a rubber glove with water and put it in the freezer.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your snacks and your guests will be talking about it long after the party ends!

If in doubt - just add red, orange or green food colouring to everything.

  1. Set the mood with the perfect Halloween playlist

Music is an essential part of any party, and Halloween is no exception. A carefully curated playlist can keep the energy high and contribute to the spooky atmosphere.

Make sure to include these Halloween classics:

  • Thriller by Michael Jackson

  • Ghostbusters Theme by Ray Parker Jr.

  • Monster Mash by Bobby "Boris" Pickett

  • Somebody’s Watching Me by Rockwell

  • Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Every year, there are more and more songs being included in the Halloween playlist ‘canon’ from horror movies and TV shows, such as Goo Goo Muck by The Cramps, which was featured in the iconic Wednesday dance scene, and Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill, which was played multiple times in season 4 of Stranger Things

If you want some instrumental, eerie background music, play soundtracks from classic horror films, such as Psycho, Halloween and Suspiria

With the perfect Halloween playlist, you’ll be able to maintain the spooky ambience all night long.

  1. Consider having a theme for your party

Having a Halloween theme adds structure to your party and makes it even more memorable. A great theme means that you can get even more creative with your decor, food and costumes. Here are some possible themes you could implement.

  • Literary Characters - Encourage guests to dress as iconic characters from literature. You might see Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, or Frankenstein’s monster wandering through your party!

  • Historical Figures - From ancient pharaohs to famous inventors, historical themes allow for a lot of creativity and unique costumes.

  • Movie Characters - If your friends are movie buffs, challenge them to come as characters from famous films—whether horror classics like The Shining or modern hits like The Avengers.

Having a cohesive theme can make planning much easier, as it gives a focus to your decorations, costumes, and activities. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter for guests who don’t know each other well!

  1. Incorporate games into your party

Games are a great way to get everyone involved and keep the energy up throughout the evening. Depending on the size of your gathering and the preferences of your guests, here are a few game ideas:

  • Body in the Boardroom (for large groups of extroverts): This is a 5-10+ player role-playing game where each guest takes on the role of a suspect or investigator in a thrilling "whodunit" scenario. As secrets unravel, the group must work together (or against each other) to solve the mystery.

  • Murder mystery case file (for smaller gatherings): For a more intimate group of friends, around 4-6 people, these classic murder mystery case file games are a fantastic option. Immerse yourself in the world of Victorian Liverpool with The Vampire of Albert Dock, transport yourself to a creepy North Yorkshire village in The Curse of Little Witchell, or take a trip aboard a cruise ship holiday gone wrong with the Diamond Princess Cold Case File. You and your guests can test your detective skills as you work together and try to uncover the killer.

  • King Arthur puzzle game (for children and families): If your party includes little ones, you can keep them entertained with a An Arthurian Adventure, a puzzle-based escape room for the entire family. Work together to solve puzzles set by the Knights of the Round Table to save the legendary King Arthur, who has been kidnapped by an evil villain.

Make the evening more immersive and interactive by incorporating games into the party.

With the right mix of decorations, food, music, and potentially a unique theme and immersive games, your Halloween party will be a night to remember. Whether you’re going for spine-chilling scares or a more playful, spooky vibe, these five key tips will help you host a celebration that’s truly unforgettable.

So get ready to have a wickedly good time—have a great spooky season!
